Facebook/PHP Web Application Developer

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation’s New Media division seeks an experienced programmer for a seven-month term of PHP web application development and programming. Successful candidates must possess relevant professional experience, including:

* A solid background in programming web applications using a PHP and MySQL backend.

* Experience building applications utilizing the Facebook Platform.

* Experience using related technologies including HTML, Javascript, JSON, XML, and AJAX.

* Working well both independently and as part of a web development team.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

* Develop, test, and deploy web-based applications utilizing connections with internal and external resources, including the Facebook Platform.

* Work within an existing PHP/MySQL infrastructure, editing and optimizing legacy code while creating new code according to existing standards.

* Maintain, optimize and create SQL queries and database interaction.

* Manage data synchronization issues between multiple server types and physical locations.

* Review requirements for proposed projects and provide realistic time estimates for the completion of work.

PREFERRED SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Knowledge of related software applications and web development tools including the Smarty PHP framework, Dreamweaver, Eclipse, PHP Development Tools, and Apache Web Server.

* Understanding of Microsoft and UNIX/LINUX development environments and database platforms.

* Understanding of open source software development.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twenty- four (24) semester credits in computer science or a related computer field; or

2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and three years of satisfactory full-time computer programming experience; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience in “2” above on the basis that sixty (60) semester credits from an accredited college is equated to one year of experience. In addition, twenty-four (24) credits from an accredited college or graduate school in computer science or a related computer field, or a certificate of at least 625 hours in computer programming from an accredited technical school (post high school), may be substituted for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four- year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

Civil Service Title: Computer Programmer Analyst II

Salary: $34 per hour Schedule: 35 hours per week

Duration: This is a 7 month seasonal position beginning November 2010.

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is New York City’s principal provider of recreational and athletic facilities and programs. Its over 5,000 properties are home to free concerts, world-class sports events, and cultural festivals.

The New Media division oversees Parks & Recreation’s internet communications including its website, www.nyc.gov/parks, the primary public web gateway to accessing the agency’s services and information. In addition, the New Media Team also performs a variety of tasks including application development, multi-media development, data management, technical consultation, and presentation production.
